My husband and I have always been health conscious. We exercise regularly. We try to get enough sleep (as much sleep as new parents can get) and eat as healthy as possible. Except on cheat days when we eat buffet and eat like there’s no tomorrow. We do not smoke. We limit our drinking to occasional social events. Hubby has been doing Judo since the age of 10 and Brazilian Jiujitsu since early 2000. Before we met I have been doing kickboxing, karate and Muay Thai for over seven years. So eating healthy has always been our ‘normal.’
When I got pregnant with Izzy, health went to a whole new different level. From Paleo diets and eating as much food directly from the source (no canned and processed food, etc.), we went into organic living to incorporating super foods like Chia seeds, Maca powder, Manuka Honey and other stuff to our daily meals. We were into the green living wagon way before the green hype even started in the Philippines. We also read and researched a lot.
I was very firm on wanting to have a healthy family. Luckily no one has been hospitalized for health issues yet since we got married and I want to keep it that way. We do not keep junk food, sodas or any unhealthy food in the house. From cooking oil to seasonings to salt, coffee, butter, everything! I always ensure I get the healthiest option and alternative that is available today. I can compromise not shopping for myself if it means health for my family. We do not even have sugar in the house. We get our sugar from fruits and veggies. The only sweets that I allow in the house are Baked By Anita goodies because I know Anita uses organic and premium ingredients, and I know her sources to be some of the most reliable sources in the country today. No preservatives, no synthetic ingredients, no food coloring – no nasty stuff! And yes – sometimes Ben & Jerry’s (I’m only human!!!) and Adam’s Seriously Good Ice Cream – who, by the way, also uses as much organic ingredients in his ice creams as possible!
Even our toiletries from The Souq Organics are all organic and natural. We use Messy Bessy for laundry, dish washing and cleaning the house. Izzy’s hair and body wash are all organic that I mostly ordered overseas. Lucky for all of us new moms today, there are lots of healthier options in the Philippine market today. Even our house help and yaya eat organic, and we try to educate them on health benefits. No other food gets in the house unless I permit it.
Last June 19, Mommy Mundo invited me to an exclusive Health in a Platter event organized and presented by Cambridge Nutritional Sciences Philippines, LifeScience and Melawares, where they zoned-in on preventive wellness, understanding food sensitivity, how the body responds to food and how to achieve good nutrition that our body needs.
Being in the organic wagon since early 2000 and being knowledgeable about food allergy (I MUST know because I have so many!!!) – I was pretty confident that I would know many of the things they will discuss (And so I thought!!!). I often keep myself open to discussions like these, as I always gain valuable information and key take-aways. Knowledge is power! True enough, I didn’t realize I was totally ignorant of facts about food intolerance.
Food allergy and food intolerance are two different things. In food allergy, you see the classic negative side effects immediately. Examples: swelling, redness, anaphylactic shock and others. So you know right away that you must not eat or you must limit intake of the particular food that causes your allergies. In food intolerance, it takes longer before the negative side effects manifest. It can take hours or days or weeks to months! Suddenly, the healthy organic food that I thought is keeping my family healthy is not so healthy anymore! “One man’s food is another man’s poison.” Without knowing it, we might be causing long term damage to our love ones, painfully and slowly. If we keep on feeding our family food that they are intolerant with, sooner or later, their system would crash. It was likened to a car by Dr. Lui Valencia – “If you have a diesel, would you put a gasoline? What will happen if you do that?”
Suddenly, feeding my family as much organic and natural food as I can get, is no longer enough. [Hyperventilating!!! Que horror!] As a mom, it is one of my major responsibilities to know each and every family member’s food sensitivity, to prevent future long-term illnesses and to keep everyone as healthy as I can possibly can.

I will have my husband take this test too. Hopefully it will help his over-all health and we can address his weight management concerns. As soon as Izzy turns two, I will also have her tested so I can give her the right fuel to support her physical and mental development. I’ve been reading and researching about it since the event. And everything I have read so far explains some of the symptoms my husband and I are having.
Good food is no longer just about serving and preparing hearty, tasty, colorful meals in the family table. It is beyond eating organic food. It is also as important to know about food sensitivity. Remember:
